Description
Annual with large, lush green leaves, square purple stems and deep purple flowers. Has a strong, spicy aroma that is a cross between cinnamon and aniseed (licorice) basil.
Siam Queen is more tender and intensely flavoured, and its flavour is more stable under high or extended cooking temperatures, than Sweet Basil. Excellent in Thai cooking, tomato dishes, meat and brinjals. Superb with potato and onion stir fry. Add leaves and flowers to salad. Flavour pasta sauces (notably pesto), vegetables (especially beans, peppers) and soups.
It is very fast and easy to grow, and also quite pleasing to the eye. Flower heads are deep burgundy, which contrasted nicely against the pale green and burgundy leaves. Pinch out growing tips to encourage bushiness and delay flowering. Makes an excellent container or bedding plant. Use in companion planting to deter white fly.
