Description

(C. baccatum) Also known as Aji Limon or as Kellu Uchu/Qillu Uchu in Peru where it originated, this seasoning pepper ripens to a bright lemon, almost neon yellow colour, sometimes with a dark purple blush. The flavour is a very clean, uncomplicated, slightly citrus-y heat. Rambling 60cm tall plants are covered with the thin-walled, conical fruits which reach 5-8cm in length, with very few seeds.

At 15000-30000 Scoville units the heat is significant without being overbearing, making this pepper, with its lemony tang, perfect for spicier salsas and citrus-based homemade hot sauces. Lemon Drops are great for fresh eating or for canning and can be used in just about any type of dish, especially soups and stir-fries. They can also be dried to make pepper flakes or ground into powder. A very versatile and popular pepper, they are not often found in stores but may sometimes be found at farmers markets.

Plants require a relatively long season (i.e. they can take a while to start producing) but are extremely productive and once they get going there is no stopping them, with each plant producing up to 100 or more fruits. They also withstand colder temperatures during late Autumn so they will outlast all of your other peppers at the end of the season. Easy to grow and does equally well in pots or the ground but you might want to stake them as they tend to sprawl a bit. Good disease and pest resistance and tolerates drought well.

If you love both citrus tang and hot peppery spice, then the lemon drop is a pepper that you must get to know. 100-120 days.
