Description

The gardeners favourite, Aquadulce Broad Beans are highly prolific and easy to grow, and remain one of the most delicious broad beans in terms of flavour and texture. It is a white seeded variety, with slender pods up to 23cm long, and it establishes itself very quickly to produce a very early crop. They are an ideal variety for children to learn to grow.

Broad beans are best suited to a cool climate, and they only grow satisfactorily at temperatures below 15°C. This variety is universally recognised as being best hardy broad bean for an autumn sowing and can be sown anytime from autumn until spring.

Grow beans in full sun on fertile, well manured soil, with protection from strong winds. Plant in double rows, allowing at least 60cm between each double row. Sow at a depth of 5cm deep and a distance of 25cm apart within each row and water well. Germination usually takes around 10 days. 90 days with a height of 90-100cm.

Planting Tip: Try growing broad beans with summer savory to help repel blackfly, a common pest of broad beans. Pinching out the growing tips once pods have set also helps with this. Support the plants as they grow by placing a cane or stout stick at each corner and tying in with string, especially in windy sites. Keep well watered especially when flowering and as the pods set. Pick regularly as the pods swell and the beans are tasty, soft and tender, and to promote further pod production.
