Watermelon radish (Raphanus sativus), also known as Roseheart or Red Meat radish, is an heirloom Chinese Daikon radish with large, 7-9cm round roots. With a creamy white skin and sometimes pale green shoulders, the flesh is also white closest to the exterior, but then becomes bright, circular striations of pink and magenta toward the center, just like a watermelon.
The flesh is tender but crisp, succulent and firm. Flavour is mild, only slightly peppery with some sweet notes. Excellent raw, cooked or pickled and can be sliced over salads, into stir fries or on sandwiches. Pairs well with fennel, apple, cheese, butter, creamy dressings, vinaigrettes, bacon, white fish, cucumbers, mild salad greens, cooked eggs, citrus, cilantro and mint.
Best grown in cool weather as overly warm soil temperatures can affect the flavour, turning the mild, sweet pepper flavour into a bitter sting. 60 days.
