Description

An old favourite, Rutgers is proven to be highly productive. The large, red, slightly flattened fruits have a thick flesh with superior flavour. Strong determinate vines yield a large initial crop followed by several flushes of fruit. Outstanding as a fresh slicer, it is also a favourite for canning.

This is one of those classic tomatoes that has been used as a parent in the breeding of many hybrids. Seldom has problems with cracking. Resistant to verticillium wilt (V), fusarium wilt (F), and alternaria stem canker (A). A fine New Jersey heirloom. 60-100 days.

(A vintage open-pollinated variety dating to 1920 when it was developed for Campbell's Soup and then improved upon in 1934 by Rutgers University. Disease resistant stabilized cross between J.T.D and Marglobe, it is considered one of the best canning tomatoes. An interesting note: This tomato is 'out of this world' - literally! It was sent by NASA into space as part of its Seeds in Space program).

Determinate (bush) variety.
