Description

(Thymus vulgaris) English thyme, also called garden thyme and German thyme, is native to the western Mediterranean area and now widely cultivated throughout most temperate climes. Thyme is one of the most popular herbs in French cuisine.

Care & Growing:

In spring or autumn, sow Thyme seeds in a seed tray and keep plants moist while young. Plant out at about 15cm apart into any well drained soil. Once well established, Thyme does not require much watering or any fertilizer. Harvest only very lightly in the first year (if at all). Harvest is all year round but during winter the plants stop growing, so also harvest only lightly. The thyme sprigs can be frozen or dried - both methods retain the original flavour.

Thyme has aromatic, cosmetic, culinary, decorative and medicinal uses. The dried flowers and leaves are used to scent potpourris and sachets and is often used in wreaths and in floral arrangements. Thyme also is used as an antiseptic and stimulant in herb lotions and baths. It flavours vinegars, herbal butter, tea, poultry, fish, stuffings, stews, soups, bread, mayonnaise, mushrooms and broccoli. Fresh or dried thyme may be added to salads.

Thyme can be grown in containers.
