Sweet Genovese Basil

Description

Genovese Basil has a shiny leaf that curls under as the plant gets bigger. This variety will grow about 45cm tall and has a spread of 30cm. Growing tips should be pinched out and used regularly to encourage a bushier plant and to discourage flowering and seeding. The leaves have a slight anise scent and a taste that is sweet, yet slightly peppery. Perfect for any herb garden and indispensable in the kitchen.

Though its name and its reputation are as Italian as it gets, many find it interesting to note that the cultivar that we call Genovese Basil actually hails from Asia and North Africa, and then made its way north and west centuries ago.

Genovese Basil is considered by all to be the superior basil for making the tastiest pesto in the world. Plant in a sunny spot and enjoy a tasty harvest of one of the world's favourite herbs.

Basil & tomatoes are a perfect match for eating but if you grow them next to each other they make a perfect couple as the smell of the basil keeps aphids away from the tomatoes – a natural companion plant.

This herb is easy to grow and makes a good container plant for either inside or outside.
