Description

Very tender and mild, a pre-1885 heirloom variety. As the name indicates, Russian Red originates from Siberia and was introduced to Canada by Russian traders. Oak type, frilly, tender leaves have a red tinge and stems are a purplish-red. Taste is sweet, and raw leaves are crisp to the bite. Belongs to the swede/rutabaga family whereas most other kales belong to the cabbage family.

One of our favorite kales for soups and stews or stir fried in sesame oil with a bit of ginger. Very frost tolerant, it actually tastes better after a light frost. Harvest the outside leaves and it just keeps on growing like a weed with little to no care. 50-65 days from transplant.

Seeds/Packet: (min. 50 Seeds)
