Anise Basil

Description

Anise Basil (Ocimum basilicum), also known as Liquorice Basil 'Anise' or Persian Basil, is an lanky growing annual plant, with purple stems and green leaves that have a purple hue to them. Anise Basil blossoms with purple flowers and has both the aroma and flavour of sweet liquorice.

This basil grows up to 45 cm tall, but the seeds can take a long time to germinate and the plant doesn't grow quite as quickly as other basil plants do, taking about 72 days from seed. Prefers full sun and regular watering. This variety is attractive to bees, butterflies, and birds.

Anise Basil can be used fresh or it can be dried. It is possibly native to Persia and is popular in South-Asian cooking, particularly Vietnamese. The anise/liquorice flavour of this variety compliments fish, tomato, or fruit based recipes and is also good for making tea and flavouring desserts.
