Description
The Tree Tomato or Tamarillo (Cyphomandra betaceae) fruit is an exotic, Peruvian, tangy, egg-shaped fruit up to 5cm long that is packed with vitamins and minerals. It should not be confused with the Tomatillo (Physalis philadelphica) which is similar to, and related to, the Cape Gooseberry. The Tamarillo skin has a bitter taste but the juicy fruits can be sliced and eaten raw, just scoop out the delicious flesh and drizzle with honey for a great breakfast or snack. Yellow/orange fruits are considered best for preserving because of their superior flavour.
Germinate seeds at warm temperatures and do not allow the soil to dry out. Germination can be slow and erratic, taking approx 35 days. Grow in large pots or containers indoors under glass or outdoors in warmer areas after all risk of frost has passed.
The small tree can grow to 3m, bears fruit within 18 months of planting and is short lived (5-8 years). Orange Variety.
Seeds/Packet: (min. 25 Seeds)
